Our family finally recieved our first chicks today. :yaThey came from efowl.com and they all arrived healthy and active. They took to eating and drinking almost immediately. Our repurposed material brooder seems to be working great and staying the right temperature for them. We ordered 5 buff orps, 5 silver laced wyandottes and 5 black jersey giants. Only 1 extra arrived a slw.

You'll be buying a larger waterer pretty quickly, I'm glad I bought the one gallon size initially and will have to increase that soon. I did have to raise it up, twice, to keep the wood chips to a minimum.

I also understand that the Black Jersey's mature much later than the norm, not reaching adulthood until about 20 months.

Thanks for the replies. We made our brooder out of a shipping crate from our recent move. We found hinges and a knob in our new shop junk cans and my sons and I painted it with our leftover paint. It turned out pretty good and kind of looks like a piece of furniture. I do have two of these waterers in the brooder they were found in the barn and I cleaned and disinfected them with boiling water and a bleach solution soak.

Here is a picture of our brooder:
