My First Coop (PHOTO'S)

I think it looks great. I live in similar surroundings so we probably have the same predators and lots of them. I'd sure bury wire all the way around and put wire over the top of the pen.

Isn't wire flooring bad for hens? Maybe someone else knows better.

Yes, I wouldn't do wire flooring in run or coop either. It will be quite drafty but it's also a great opportunity for opossums and coons to try pulling a chicken through the grate. Running the wire underground around the run is great for deterring digging pests.

I love it! I ran wire around mine and buried out the edge about 10" and then covered that with heavy large rocks! We have lots of predators. I have had this for a year and have had nothing get it as of today!
Good Luck with your surgery and your chickens! Nice House!

Thanks for your responses....after surveying the situation this morning over coffee wtching the morning sun peek over the mountain... I've been sold, my girls will scratch the dirt...no screen floor. However I will have to get a load of dirt and level off the outside pen....which will be perfect because I can bury the fence on the deep side.
I'm not going to say much about the bears, so far I've only seen signs of bears twice in 6 years....nose on the picture window with to prints on the glass and muddy paw prints on my deck.
I did hear wild turkey hens clucking near me this AM while having morning coffee.
I have less than a week to get it closed in and functional.....the back surgery is scheduled for 3/3 and I want to watch chickens for rehab!!!
I'll invite you all to come down, or up, or over... when I can travel from my home in Lawrenceville to Clayton, GA - Rabun County....sit by the fire outside in the pavilion, bbq, ride in the golf cart, play on the John Deere, watch the chickens, feed the wild birds, watch Dish TV
Thank you all for you kind comments....I do however Over Build thanks to Tim Allen.........God Bless

Hey Hap,

The coop and property are gorgeous! Good luck with the upcoming surgery and rehab, too.

I found this site a year ago recooping(!) from a second back surgery and got into chickens for the first time. One more level needs to be fused that will be scheduled in April after a Horse Event at the farm I work at, and I too will be rehabbing again with the chooks. It sure makes the time pass quicker, and way more fun, too!

I saw a thread that suggested putting wire down in run and adding several inches of dirt over it. Still helps keep diggers out and leaves something to scratch in. I thought of this because you mentioned having to add dirt anyway. Good Luck and your place is beautiful.

I love your little coop. It does have a nice old look to it. I'm still gettin ideas on here from all these great pics and great members. I am soooo envious!

Have a good week people....have you hugged your chick today?
