In the Brooder
Whew, finally got my first few eggs.
Mine is on left, store bought on right.
First eggs are small but will be normal size soon so size not part of test.
Taste: could not tell much difference if any in taste.
Fried both. Both turned out well.
Nutritional value: believe mine to be far better. Hens cared for daily, coop cleaned daily, fed and watered well, plus treats like clover and marigolds, nasturtiums, pumpkins, squash, cucumber, etc. Hens looked at daily for any changes in condition.
The deep orange in yolk I think may tell it all: Far better egg to eat!
Conclusion: though I may not have noticed a difference in taste I know the eggs are far better for me, the hens are healthier than industrial hens, and the pride I get at raising my own food is beyond compare.
So, those who are patiently waiting, I know your anxieties in waiting but well worth it when you see them appear. Enjoy them and know you are providing for yourself and family the most nutritional egg and pride in knowing that all your hard work has paid off.
I have 5 production red hens. Enough eggs for me and a few to give away to neighbors that have been so supportive.
Gotta love the chickens!
