Oh, I can't believe I can't find the camera!!! I actually squealed, I was so excited. My 9 yo had come in to tell me one of the chickens was in the nesting box this morning, so I went out to look about an hour ago, and lo and behold . . .one perfect looking, little brown egg!

It's so exciting! I've got one chicken in the tractor sortof looking confused, while the others are hiding out under the tree in the backyard, so I'm wondering if she's about to lay, too. It's about 95 degrees today--whew! So I know we've got to check the boxes pretty often so the eggs don't cook in the shell, out there!

Now, if any of these were roosters, I'd majorly be able to tell by now, right? They're New Hampshire Reds, and from the pics online their combs would be huge (wattles too) if they were boys, I think. My husband is scared of eating the first egg . . .do we need to wait and give them some time to adjust or anything? gosh, can you tell I'm not a farm girl? But I wish I had been!

Doing the happy egg dance here!

Congrats!!!!! I'm still waiting. Mine just turned 17 weeks today.

As for knowing the difference of roo or hen... if your hens are laying you should know.

I was able to tell with mine by about 9 to 10 weeks.

I ate alot of my mothers firsts eggs... nothing wrong with them... just small

Congrats! Now you will be going and check the nesting boxes - like - every hour.... That's how pathetic I've become. Got my first egg last week.

Pathetic ... that's a good description of the females in this house. We go out every 1/2 hour to hour to check for eggs and see if we can catch certain chickens in the nest boxes.

Congrats on your first egg. I've now gotten 18 as of noon today from three of my girls. Can you say 'pathetic' again? I've actually kept count of our eggs.

I still get just as excited finding an egg today as I did with our first egg.

Honestly, I think chickens and new eggs are far more interesting than anything I see on the magazines in the checkout

*sigh* It'd be different if they replaced "In Touch" with "Backyard Poultry"

I resemble that remark

I thought that was what the calender was for to keep track of how many eggs you get and different colored pens for which hen it came from.

I've gotten three eggs so far and I was so interested in keeping my first ones that I blew them out and baked with them and kept the shells. I plan on displaying them proudly or maybe even making earrings out of them.
oops, kids just came in from checking again and I'd like to make that count four!

We got our first green egg today! I also run out to check the nests many times a day, 'just in case'! I think we're all a little nuts here, but we love it!
