My first ever deformed chick. Pics may be disturbing!!!

I'm not a biology major so can't comment on specific proteins, genes, DNA strands, etc. but it really looks like the embryo was trying to split. Looks like the lower beak didn't split and the middle eye didn't split either, but got so far as to create two irisis. Whatever happen it's definitely just a fluke and like someone else said, you probably will never see another. With as complex as it is for everything to come together just right and create a new being, be it chicken, bear or human, it's really quite amazing it's ever accomplished without problems.

Laughing about the Mississippi comment. I think Arkansas has more to worry about in the jokes departement regarding something like this though.

I agree!!! I don't know if you have any local college of agricultural, but their poultry department might be interested in the chick (if you still have it!!)

Well, I still have it because I was going to show it to my DH. I don't know if they would want it or not. Plus, I would not know how to contact them. Would 70% alcohol work?

Definately put it in the fridge while you are waiting. Give the college and call and ask them...if they don't want it, maybe they'd give you some formaldehyde to preserve it. The alcohol will probably keep it for awhile, but I think it would eventually break down, but the foraldehyde will do a better job. I'm sure someone would be interested in it. I agree with other posters..probably worth some money!!!

Thanks Animalian that was interesting. And nurse_turtle thanks for sharing your experience. I have put it in a jar with alcohol. I thought about putting it in the freezer, but I don't have anything airtight. I will see if there is someone/somewhere that might want it. I'm not too worried about money, but it would be a plus. I was going to dispose of the poor little thing until I had so many of you suggest me to keep it. I am glad I did now, whether or not I do find a "home" for it.

I can only sell a full grown hen around here for $10 (some won't even pay that) , so what would be a good price?

Tell them you've approached a couple different companies (and do!) and to have their highest and best offer by Monday.
