My first ever predator death. :'( What did it?

Have to be a big rat, but yes Skunks do tend to get them to if they are hungry, they are actually just a big weasle, so they are just like them
As for the attack at hand, were there any tracks around? That would tell exactly what did it.

There weren't any tracks because the area is all grass.

The predator that killed your chicken was not looking for a large meal, so that eliminates foxes, raccoons, weasels, coyotes, possums, rats, bears, skunks, and fishers. However, an animal that is looking for a small meal, like a hawk or owl, is a prime candidate. Birds of prey tend to eat the head, leaving everything else. Also, since the door was open, it could have been a dog. As many know, dogs like to shake their prey. Shaking like this could result in a beheading, and the body could have been flung under the coop. However, the prime candidate would be an owl, because the incident happened at night, the feathers were left in a neat little pile, and owls are relatively more common than dogs.

Could be a female fox some just drag the carcass someware and left it and the head could have been thrown away by it.
