I'm a ninth grader in Northern Illinois. In my agriculture class, we were assigned to do an independent project that involved raising some sort of animal or plant and using the animal/plant for profit. I decided I was going to raise chickens and sell their eggs. I just became a member of BYC but I am looking forward to reading stories and asking questions about chickens.
I brought my small flock of 8 home last Saturday. I bought them from someone who accidentally ordered twice as many as she wanted from My Pet Chicken. They were all vaccinated for Marek's disease and I bought them off her for the same price she paid, adding up to a total of $50. I got 2 birds of four different breeds - blue andalusian, white maran, easter egger and salmon faverolle.
Elsa prefers to stay to herself. She sits in the back of the brooder but doesn't mind being handled.
Tater is the piggy of the group. She sits by the food bowl all day and when she's not eating she's sleeping.
Tot is the smallest out of all of them but she's also very feisty. She doesn't like when you reach your hands in the brooder and isn't afraid to show you who's boss with a peck or two.
Dixie Chick is the flightiest of the eight. She loves to flap her wings right after all her sisters have fallen asleep so that they all wake up and freak out a little bit.
Betty Lou is pretty small, but slightly bigger than Tot. I call her Lou Lou. She's pretty skittish but warming up to me.
April is one of the friendliest ones. She doesn't come to you, but if you pick her up she doesn't struggle to get away. She also loves her feathers stroked.
Daisy is by far the friendliest. She will come up to you as soon as you put your hand in the cage looking for treats. She's probably my favorite (don't tell the others) because of how outgoing she is.
Pepper is the largest of them. She towers over little Tot. She also loves to fly, but not as much as Dixie does. Pepper is also a piggy Tater, and enjoys following Tater around.
Here are pictures of my brooder. Please tell me what you think.
It includes a branch as a roost, a heat lamp, a wood block, a tree stump, water, feeder, and a Baby Cake (treat I purchased at the farm store for baby chicks - you can see the baby cake in the second pic).
Let me know what you think of my flock (are they gonna be good looking birds?) and my brooder!
