Thanks everyone for your welcoming nature and support it has been helpful. I defiantly feel more informed and hopefully more prepared.I will be picking up my girls this Wednesday from a local farm they will be about 10 to 12 weeks old.I bought starter feed heists since there young and it's going to be cold. Figured it would help boost there strength. I have been reading about lighting, and I don't think the side effects of trying to produce more eggs in the winter hours is worth it.

FWIW, there are no side effects to winter lighting... That's a myth.... If the chickens lived down south, they would have adequate light to lay year around... They are designed to lay year around...

Below is an answer from the Vet at Purina.... If laying year around were detrimental to the birds, there would be no recommendation for lighting.......

Are you providing at least 16 hours of light per day? Without it, they will not lay.

Thanks Dave I read it could cause cancer and shorten there lives, but I am sure that as long as you monitor your flock and give them a break during molten they'll be fine. Thanks though guess they'll always be conflicting information
