Just saw this late. Congratulations. I have a rescue arab, and while I think all my horses are smart, he is really a fast learner.
Someone summed it up well saying the smart ones are the best and the worst. No breaks can be a problem. Hope you find a good solution.
One of my TW's was a real hard case in other areas because of the way he was treated. Circumstances dictated the first month I had no saddle and could just love him and do ground work with him, no riding. Actually it was the best thing that could have happened for bonding, etc.
