Hello! I’m looking for any advice on how to care for my 6 mo old hen, affectionately named Gravy, who isn’t feeling too well. Here are her symptoms:
- heavy breathing, her whole body moves with each breath
- comb seems a bit shriveled
- she will stand and close her eyes
- her little nose is a bit runny
- poop is brown / appears normal

More info that could be helpful:
- When purchasing Gravy they had her labeled as a Blue Rock, but I think she might be an Orpington(?)
- We are in Minnesota, very cold temps but my girls are in a insulated coop with plenty of water and food.
- Gravy is laying eggs, although I can’t say for sure the last day she laid one.. i have 5 hens and have gotten as many as 4 eggs on a day so far.
- I tried to feel for an egg in case of her being egg bound, but i don’t think i can feel one.
- Her crop is not full, as far as I can tell.
- She will act normal for a while but then just stand there all fluffed up with her eyes closed, which I’ve read to mean she is conserving energy.. ?

Thank you for any info or hints I could try to help my sweet girl feel better fast. I am a very new chicken mother, but these girls already have a huge place in my heart. 💓

Is there any color to the discharge from her nose. It could be gape worm which causes heavy breathing. It could also be coryza or mycoplasma. Just start googling and go grom there. These chicken forums have also helped me so much. Good luck hope she gets better. I'm working with two sick roos.
