my first ostrich egg...

Hold fast, you tried getting a response from it? May need to try once in the morning, once at noon and once in the evening, could be a stubborn sleeper (Hoping).
i should sleep as well LOL -- excuse the bad humor -- my way of dealing with it ... yup, been checking 2 or 3 times a day --- no changes with movement, sound or candling

Still hope John...Good luck.
It's my turn soon, by Saturday I will have 8 Emu eggs incubating, wish me luck lol...Sadly can't be candled, so will keep turning ...turning... turning for nearly 50 days, not really knowing, what's inside,

that HAS to suck!! (i'd probably go into debt looking for somrething that'd shine thru -- do you think a stethoscope would be of any help?) .... when i have my peas and silkies reduced to adequate #'s, i may knock on your door for some emu eggs...

(be cool to have eggs from england) --- wishing you the BEST of luck

Thank you John ....I got a bit impatient towards the end as you can imagine, not beeing able to candle and bought a stethoscope, was only 99p free delivery on ebay, but it was so sensitive, all I could hear is touching the shell much louder and miss the heartbeat lol so gave up and let nature take it's course and they started hatching soon after.

Last season there was some speculation about everything from stethoscopes, ultrasound and even X-ray. Don't think any of them worked or were otherwise too risky to try on a live egg.

I have had some limited success with a stethoscope.. but you need a good one that you can set the egg ON without it rolling around much.. even then you won't hear much unless the chick is awake. Mine is pretty good.. but I have only heard a heartbeat on a couple of occasions.. usually it's scratching and sounds of movement that mine picks up. Even that only happens rarely.
Usually if the chick is moving around or scratching enough to make a sound that it will pick up, it's moving enough that you can see movement when the egg is sitting on a flat surface.

With an ostrich egg you would be better off candling it and looking for the membrane to move..

By that stage they were making so much noise I could just hold em up to my ear, no stethoscope needed.
Those first few wiggles were quite a relief...

used a blade on a dremmel to slice a line through the shell's air cell end --- was gonna make a window if needed --- the egg's rotten --- have it sitting outside for the night -- i'll crack it open tomorrow to see if there ever was an embryo ... the taps must've been in my head because i don't think it'd get THAT foul in a few days...
hmm.png
........ a little bummed, but so be it --- i'd rather deal with an infertile rotten egg than one that makes almost full term ..thanks again to ALL of you -- i really appreciate your time and knowledge

sorry it wasn't any good.. I had a feeling it was bad when you said the membrane had pulled away and you saw liquid...

So are you going to try again?
