Having a look on feathersite..... you guys are so lucky to have all the different colours!! we only have white pied and normal here in oz... no blackshouldered either.... oh well doesn't matter, usually with most mutations in alot of species the normals are the most colourful, I do really like those oaten hens though

Many of the other mutations are very beautiful even if not 'colorful' like blue. Also it's very hard to capture in a picture how some of the colors really look in person. I was never impressed at all by pictures of Bronze, to be frank, they looked downright ugly in many pictures. Upon opening the boxes of bronzes it was very much WHOA they are BEAUTIFUL! moment... They're one of my top favorite colors.

Peaeggs are fine, not slimy at all.. just very rich due to yolk being gigantic.

Goose eggs OTOH have a sour tinge...

I have ate peafowl eggs , to me they and quail,pheasant,turkey,and chicken eggs all about the same taste, not like waterfowl eggs.

I like all except duck and geese eggs.


NOT slimy at all.

Hi guys,
Well a friend of my partner came over yesterday morning quite early with her adhd daughter who is 10, and I was still in bed, my partner had told them that we had just bought some peacocks, and Amy (adhd) went into histeria and insisted on seeing them, they both told her to wait until I woke up. Well anyway it was too much for her so she snuck down to the pen and opened the door! Went in and they must of frightened her because I awoke to her screaming running to the house LEAVING THE PEN DOOR OPEN, I got up real quick, thinking someone was really hurt! As I looked out the window there was my male out of the pen!!! I was so angry with her. I ran down to the pen and locked the rest in.

So all day yesterday I followed him around, I was surprised that he did'nt bolt or fly off! So yesterday just before dust he headed for the long grass behind the dam, I started walking in his direction, but did'nt get to far when he took flight...... my heart nearly stopped! But to my surprise he flew over the dam and landed on the roof of the pen!! Them he settled in one of the massive gum trees not far from the pen. This morning I got up really early to check on him, and he was on the ground walking around the pen. So I would like to catch him and put him back in the pen, but if I try it may be to much for him. When people let thier peas out to early, do they take off straight away or can it take days? Is it possible he will stay here or am I dreaming? PS I have had him a week today.

Maybe before you try to catch him you can lure him in the pen with treats. You could get a stick and corral him into the pen. When we free-ranged two peafowl sometimes they would fly down off their roost and end up on the wrong side. The neighboors loved it but we wanted to teach them to stay in our yard so we could normaly corral them to go through the opening in the gate. Penuts work well to get their attention. Does he spook easily? If so that might be a problem. Just don't act all crazy carefully direct him into the pen. He probably wants to join the other birds anyways (that is why he is staying near the pen). If you do end up having to catch him watch out because when we had to catch our peahen she flew and landed on a tree branch. Luckily it wasn't high up so we scared her off the branch and somehow netted her, but it takes one mistake and your bird is high up a tree and now he will have learned what the net means.

A big fish landing net will work. Practice a bit with it to get a feel for the net if you must net him. If you are not comfortable trying to net him yourself then have someone else do it. I couldn't do it I had to have my mom do it because I was afraid I would end up somehow hurting the bird. I hope you can get him back in the pen!

I only have one pen is the problem.... if I open it the others may escape. But the main thing i'm wondering, as I do want them freerange eventually, is would he have taken off by now if he was going to leave, cause from what I have heard, they bolt and are gone the second they get out? Anyone with these sort of experiences?

He may stick around sense you have more penned up, if we have one loose we get them in a corner and net them. The last time one of mine got out it was a Java male and the last time I seen him he was about 100' up and climbing and getting smaller and smaller and has never came back. But Javas are kinda crazy anyhow.

We we first started releasing ours we sometimes had to herd them back into the pen of an evening. Worked best with two people and just slowly walked them in. Sometimes the male would be contrary and we would get the two hens in and then have to round him up again. I would shut the door (to keep the others in) until we had him close to the pen and then open it. The calmer you can keep him the easier it will be.

My husband's niece (I claim no relationship to them, lol) stopped by one day and her three wild kids chased ours into the woods with mom looking on not saying a word. We had only just started releasing them during the day. Two came back that evening, but no #3. I walked all over looking for her and thought she was probably gone for good. Luckily she showed up again the next day and I was able to get her back in the pen.
