My first raccoon attack

If you are in an area where you're able, I'd recommend some duke's dog proof traps instead of a live trap if coons alone are the issue.

Yes it is possible to release a coon live from a Duke's (unlike a steel trap and like a live trap) but why would anyone want to?

There is no "farm" or "wildlife preserve" that wants these any more than your average property owner or farm owner does. There is no "happy ending" and "let's have a new family" ending for these raccoons. We're all dealing with their families correct?

If you go for trap, you gotta go for elimination all the way. Which means that if it's not a conibear, dispatch will be involved and it's not going to look...hmm...super peaceful every or even most times.

Of course I would like another option, like trappers coming out here with a little AVMA-approved CO2-tank device to euth the animal, not just some BS about how your service is just chasing them off for a night. Of course I would like the option of renting a sizable enough Havahart from the humane society and having them pick up the thing and euth it instead of giving me S about my own havahart!

But that's where us chicken owners are. We have the right to dispatch raccoons in our state for depredation without permit, but it must be done in a "humane manner." Which to the PETA vegans means no manner, which I'm not accepting for my property.

We are not talking about a bald eagle or even a wolf here.
 
Here is something to remember . When I lived on the big farm we had a time with the coons killing every thing that moved . My wife called the game trapper that worked nuisance trapping for the state and he came out and trapped over 35 racoons out of our yard . He said we had an infestation of racoons . So just remember this story, they can be as bad as rats . We lost many chickens and I build good cages and coops . Never underestimate the destruction an infestation of racoons can cause . The trapper said they carried rabies and racoon round worms that are very dangerous .
 
Sorry, opossums kill chickens too, and carry a parasite that's very serious or fatal for horses. And raccoons aren't good at the coop, or pooping in the yard, because of rabies, and the nasty roundworm they carry.
Safe housing for the birds, and no food left outside, helps the most to avoid having these critters hanging around.

I watched a raccoon trying to figure out a way to get into my coop last night. Grabbed the .22, but I must have made a noise because it was gone in a flash. Then I stayed up the rest of the night waiting for it to come back...which it never did. Today, we bought another live trap and I'm planning to use it tonight. Awful things... :mad:
