My first scalping :( , and now another one dead this morning!

Well I've seen people post about it but hadnt had it happen with my buttons or my coturnix yet. I have my 8 week old goldens and browns all together in a large 7 X 2 X 2 feet tall cage, there's 11 of them , 2 roos and 9 hens. I thought about dividing it in half with one roo in each but didnt... well today I go out there and my only golden roo has his scalp torn off

So I brought him inside, cleaned it and he's in a small brooder box with some heat . If he makes it, I'll have to separate him and the other roo or maybe its a mad female? I've seen him mating with some of the females , he's definitely the smaller of the roos.

Anyway , anything else I should be doing for him? If I put him back in will they attack him like chickens do when there's wounds?

Well, I would NOT put him back in with them until he's fully healed. That may sound like a long time but honestly it is not!

They heal suprisingly fast! I had a scalping happen to THREE of my tuxedo hens a few days ago (didnt post about it because I was too mad about it....) LOL! Anywho.. I was *SURE* two of them were going to die... nope... they are healing well and can finnally open their eyes again. For the first two days they couldnt see at all their eyes were swollen shut. I tore open an eye on each two most severely injured hens so they could see to eat.... and I helped them find water and food for the first two days..after that they've been able to assist themselves and like I said today tehy can see all on their own

It looked bad but suprisingly the scalp grows over really fast!

Atleast in coturnix. After they heal up you should be able to reintroduce him... what may have happened is the other roo kept trying to mate him and got frusterated because your smaller roo didnt sit still for him. I see it so much that Im betting that's the case....if it's a hen doing it, then she's just crabby

Jus tkeep him calm, and for the first day or two only bother him enough to make sure he's not dehydrated

Cool thanks Monarch!! So far his eyes arent affected.... it's behind them, but it may swell more, I think I found him pretty quick after it happened. Glad to hear they can heal up.... and quickly. I'll keep him separate and work on splitting the cage in half so they both have their own hens when he goes back in.

Believe me my three hens were so torn into i didnt want to take pictures of it for fear of being accused of allowing them to suffer (since I upload to photobucket). But it was so bad it looked like they wer egoing to die any second... and Im guessing in 3 more days I'll start seeing quill headfeathers comin on on them.

In less than 2 weeks your roo will barely look injured

He's still hanging in there, seemed a little more alert today. But then I went outside to feed and water the other quail this morning and there was a hen dead in the cage? No marks on her, just laying there dead. The only thing that seemed a little odd was her vent seemed very big and open and kind of wet... so maybe she was egg bound? Weird?
