My first Silkie ever! Is he Show Quality?

Hmmm, I was wondering that too (if the color is due to the sun).

I can take more pics today and try to get up close shots of his hackles. I looked close today and noticed the feathers do not start from the skin brassy colored. They brassy coloring is about half way down the feather on all of the few feathers with the discoloration.

He is so sweet. He shuffled like a crab towards me today. I have never seen a chicken do that. Is he just an oddball or is this a Silkie trait? I can really see now why so many people like them. They are very personable.

YW. Don't be too hasty. Depending on how far you want to go, the types of shows you want to show in and how much time/money you're willing to invest, he may be just what you want for now. Your OP said you were wanting to show in local fairs. I think he may do just fine. I'd get him in the best shape I could and then I'd go ahead and enter him. See how you like it before you invest anymore. He'd do well at that level around here. Plus you can get a feel for the judges preferences. We often get the same judges each year at the same fairs. Helps you cater to them the next time. We have one that likes girls. He judges hens and pullets more favorably. So this year we'll be entering more girls. You'll be kicking yourself if you let him go only to find out he's just what the judge at your chosen fair likes.

You may decide showings too much work, takes all the fun out for you and you enjoy just being a spectator and potential customer more. Then you'll know and you won't be out anything. You might think it's the best time you've had in forever and you want to do more of it. If that's the case, find some sanctioned shows to check out and see what the next level is like. You might find your must have future entry there. Talk to the owner. You might be able to buy it or order chicks to start preparing for next year or even another show this year. When you've got something better and decide he needs to go, bring him for the sale table at your next show.

Our entries for this year are actually overkill for at least two of the 4 shows we're planning to enter. I can guarantee there will be a lot of comments mostly unfavorable of the "OMG, what could they possibly be thinking?" variety. Who cares, maybe it'll spur more interest in poultry and next year we'll have more competition. It'll make for a better show every year. Nothing wrong with that.

I wish I could take credit for this years entries, but they're 100% the result of someone elses hard work and breeding skills. Thank goodness, we really lucked out. I was a miserable failure at hatching shipped eggs. Still trying though. I have a bator full as we speak and a couple dozen chicks already ordered just in case, all to better prepare for next year. And I'm only needing 6 entries. Two months ago, our best Silkie for this year while better than last years entry pales next to your new fella. Horrible comb and sparse leg feathering just to name a few of his faults, but I fully intended to let the kids enter him and wasn't about to turn him loose before I had better birds to replace him. After all, a bird in the hand is worth 2 in the bush.

A few older pics. He's got a better topknot now and a bit more leg feathering. Still awful next to your guy.

I saw him yesterday too, he has a GREAT personality!! I have seen worse than him entered in APA shows. There is a smaller show in Pensacola on the 22 of May - there is a thread with Tony and James's phone numbers - its a little ride and a 2.50 entry fee and let a judge look at him!! Cheap evaluation if you ask me.... just a thought.... Good luck with him whatever you decide to do.

Ok, I got a few pics to show the gold in the neck. Now I am leaning towards it not being from the sun. There are too many black feathers on top of the gold ones for me to think the sun did it (helps to stare at the pics for a while

).

Avery - How old is your roo in those pics? Do you have any pics of him now? I would be very curious to see how he has changed/improved over time.

Jackie - Pensacola is a bit far for me. I'd love to go ... but I doubt hubby would be okay with a 6 hour ride for a chicken show, LOL!

Ooops ... pics would help.

He was about 6mnths old in those pics if I remember right. Not sure "improved" is truly accurate. His comb is monstrous for a Silkie. It's multiple points and horns now. He's an attentive roo though to the Silkie hen. As soon as I can locate the battery charger, I could get some current pics. He's caged at the moment next to his girl. She's a new momma and he was stressing too much not being near her.

He was 3 months older in those pics than the 2 blues in my 1st pics and about a month older than the black cockerel. I need to get some new pics of them too.

They have 7 new chicks together and I have a splash from better stock we just hatched. You can already see a big difference between them. I'm awfully tempted to breed her with some of the better stock just because I love her coloring. No idea what it is though.

Ya know, a little quality time with a sharpie would clear his gold right up.

speckledpullet dont rule out he could do good in a show. I have a few that people said would get DQ in shows and my brother and cousin show my birds all the time in poultry shows and do very well.

Avery - I'd be interested to see pics of him now if you happen to get a chance to take new pics. Could you also get a pic of his comb? I keep hearing people use the term "horns" but have not actually seen what those are.

LOL, a sharpie or a day at the salon would do the trick!

He can put his feet up and relax while I give him a new hair do.

Thanks! I am on the fence now. Yesterday I was set to sell him and now ...

I am leaning towards keeping him and at least trying one or two county fairs.

Even if you were to sell him later on right now he is a very good specimen for learning more about them. He's got more plus' than negatives. I would move slowly, show him at the fair, learn what you can and then make any decisions after that.
