YW. Don't be too hasty. Depending on how far you want to go, the types of shows you want to show in and how much time/money you're willing to invest, he may be just what you want for now. Your OP said you were wanting to show in local fairs. I think he may do just fine. I'd get him in the best shape I could and then I'd go ahead and enter him. See how you like it before you invest anymore. He'd do well at that level around here. Plus you can get a feel for the judges preferences. We often get the same judges each year at the same fairs. Helps you cater to them the next time. We have one that likes girls. He judges hens and pullets more favorably. So this year we'll be entering more girls. You'll be kicking yourself if you let him go only to find out he's just what the judge at your chosen fair likes.
You may decide showings too much work, takes all the fun out for you and you enjoy just being a spectator and potential customer more. Then you'll know and you won't be out anything. You might think it's the best time you've had in forever and you want to do more of it. If that's the case, find some sanctioned shows to check out and see what the next level is like. You might find your must have future entry there. Talk to the owner. You might be able to buy it or order chicks to start preparing for next year or even another show this year. When you've got something better and decide he needs to go, bring him for the sale table at your next show.
Our entries for this year are actually overkill for at least two of the 4 shows we're planning to enter. I can guarantee there will be a lot of comments mostly unfavorable of the "OMG, what could they possibly be thinking?" variety. Who cares, maybe it'll spur more interest in poultry and next year we'll have more competition. It'll make for a better show every year. Nothing wrong with that.
I wish I could take credit for this years entries, but they're 100% the result of someone elses hard work and breeding skills. Thank goodness, we really lucked out. I was a miserable failure at hatching shipped eggs. Still trying though. I have a bator full as we speak and a couple dozen chicks already ordered just in case, all to better prepare for next year. And I'm only needing 6 entries. Two months ago, our best Silkie for this year while better than last years entry pales next to your new fella. Horrible comb and sparse leg feathering just to name a few of his faults, but I fully intended to let the kids enter him and wasn't about to turn him loose before I had better birds to replace him. After all, a bird in the hand is worth 2 in the bush.
A few older pics. He's got a better topknot now and a bit more leg feathering. Still awful next to your guy.
