So it took a week to figure this out. A bird died for no good reason last week. Then, I noticed one of my girls acting lethargic. Great. I'm thinking upper respiratory. I walk in the coop yesterday to a bloody murder scene. Two totally different birds are pooping blood. I already ran to tractor supply for all the stuff. Let's see what happens...fingers crossed. They are also dining on yogurt. I heard that helps. Just sharing.

i am sorry :( I had 3 baby chicks die & I have them on an anitbiotic. But just got some amprolium. I didnt find at Agway before & ordered some from ebay. I think it is coccidiosis. so far with the other antibiotic their all the rest are ok . I am going to start this stuff today.. good luck with yours

Ohhhh that sucks. I just cleaned...again... The whole coop so I can inspect new poo. There is a medicated chick feed with the active ingredient in corid in it. That was my oops. I had 6 chicks unexpectedly dropped in my lap and was already using straight starter/grower with no medication. So I totally didn't think about it. I put them out in the coop when they were big enough and the rest is a mess. Literally. Good luck with your little chickys

I started them on med crumbles.. when that 5olb bag was gone I got a small bag of No med crumbles because of the ducklings. and then I was told to get game feed for the ducklings, so I did & went back to the med. feed. and I didn't let them out of the coop for a few wks. I just put up a hard ware cloth screen so they got alot of fresh air. The coop does have holes for fresh air covered with hard ware cloth to keep critters out. It seemed shortly after I put up a fence & let them out, I had a sick one. the anitbiotic seemed to work, but it took a turn for the worst the next morn. anyway... all seems good, energetic

What meds are you giving them? If you are using Corid, or any Amprolium product, then do not give yogurt at the same time. Yogurt or other milk products like buttermilk can coat the intestine and may actually make treatment less effective. Buttermilk is often used as a way to slow the progression of a coccidiosis outbreak until meds can be started. Corid is your best bet for treatment, run the full course of treatment and then give vitamins and/or probiotic's if desired.

Watch the sick birds closely, they very often will not drink enough on their own if they are feeling sick. If that's the case you need to give them the medicated water with a dropper every couple hours the first day or so until they start drinking well on their own.

I didn't know that. I am using Corid, day three, and I have been giving them yogurt (didn't know that). It seems there are not as many bloody droppings but I can stop the yogurt. Question now: I have probiotic powder. Wait until treatment is over before giving them that?
Other than one or two bloody poos, which is a far cry from the murder scene I walked into Sunday, the girls are ALL acting VERY active and much better. I know day 3-5 any given time one can drop so I am cautiously optimistic.

Yup

I'm sorry davlyn, I'm quoting you and not replying because I really suck at technology. Lol! I have to go get game feed too. Three turkeys have now been dropped in my lap. Does anyone know if baby turkeys can eat starter chick for a while? I'm a little cut off from civilization here and I get all that special food from tractor supply. Maybe I can order it in the meantime.
