The brooder is set up, the heat lamp is warming everything up, and I'm waiting for the babies to arrive (they ship today)! So, as an introduction I'm filling out the questionnaire. Hello to everyone!

(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?

I am totally new to chickens. We kept a couple of parakeets when I was about 5 or 6, but I vaguely remember them.

(2) How many chickens do you have right now?

I am expecting 10 chicks.

(3) What breeds do you have?

6 Buff Orpingtons, 4 Black Australorps & 1 Barred Rock

(4) How did you find out about BackYardChickens.com?

I have wanted to raise chickens for a long time. Like almost everything I want to do, I spend years researching first. I found this site after I ordered my chickens though. Lucky!

(5) What are some of your other hobbies?

I process and spin fiber, knit, read, draw, sing and play the guitar and bodhran.

(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share.

I'm a freelance writer and designer. I work part time as a publicist for a library. I take care of an elderly parent, have a dog and two indoor cats. I live practically in one of our National Parks, and am trying to homestead my front yard (next year my backyard, but that is "phase 2" of the grand plan). You can read all about my adventures with chickens, fiber and farming (use air quotes) on my blog http://cricklewoodfarm/blog/

Homesteading as in making your property practical and productive... no giant lawn? Awesome! I'm starting to do that too, first it was 2 8x4 raised planters, now its 2/3rds my backyard, than it will be 3/4 of my front yard. Though pretty and nice to walk on, I think lawns are a waste of good growing space... I can't wait to tear mine out and grow more food!

We're so glad you've joined, congrats on your future flock; Its so exciting-the anticipation, the prep, and the arrival. Good choices too on the breeds, you must have done your homework!
