My floor in coop

My husband and I went out to get started on the building that is going to be my coop. Had to burn a lot of garbage (just bought house) and I realized that the wooden floors are going to have to come up (a lot of rotten wood). this will bring the level of the dirt to below ground level. So I was wondering if I can get all the crud out of base dirt should I leave it or should I get a load of soil to raise it (any other inexpensive ideas are welcome).

lets see if i understand you.your going to tear out the floor in a building thats going tobe your henhouse.id put aload of sand in the building.to bring the floor up.

Get any crud out that is underneath the floor, i.e. nails, old wood, mice nests, rocks, etc. Sprinkle lime over the earth that is left, then add washed sand until it reaches the level you want.

Since your floor will be dirt/sand, you need to add some protection around the edges to keep critters from digging in. Burying hardware cloth or welded wire around the outside and attaching it to the wood should do it.

personnally I would replace the wooden floor. that being said if you opt not to do that, I would bring the inside level higher than the outside or you will have a pond inside when it rains.
