My four little hens (Cochins and Dominques)

Those babies poking out are too cool and a beautiful Cochin mom helping chicks in need. Thanks for the pic.

Hugh and UppityPeon- Thank you! She is a really good mom, but has yet to brood this year! Its too bad one baby is blocking her face but their little heads poking out was too funny! She puffed up so much to cover everyone who wanted to get under her

My little chicks update:

Cochins are 5 weeks today (Big C and Little C) and the Dominques (Big D and Little D) are 6 weeks...growing up fast. Too soon to name them all, Big C has been named Cleopatra (Cleo) because of her prominent eye shadow.

Before tonight, the Doms have been flying into their coop at dusk and roosting on their own, but the Cochins have been huddling outside in the dark and chirping for me to come and lift them up into the coop every night (only for 7 days).

Tonight, I built an outside ramp that leads up to the pop window (no pop door yet). Cleo (Big C) walked up to the top of the ramp and chirped for Little C to follow her lead (seemed like forever). Now it was getting dark and Little C was still chirping her head off. I put a light in another coop window and walked away. I came back 5 minutes later and both Cochins were inside. Doms were roosting happily on the upper roost and the Cochins were huddled on the coop floor.

I need to get batteries for the camera, then take some new pics.

I already saw Scott's coop pics, but I didn't click on page 2 and see his chicks and their parents. Beautiful Cochin parents and cute chicks.

I joined a chicken group last month on www.meetup.com it meets once a month in Santa Cruz. Next meeting is June 23 at 7pm. It is free to join and attend.

I put a big slice of watermelon in their dish today and they went crazy. When I came home tonight, they were banging their dish for more. I threw them some grass clippings tonight, watermelon for breakfast tomorrow.

Chickening is a lot of fun, I am looking forward to seeing them all grown up like Scott's hen. Right now, their combs are starting to grow a tiny bit and change a little color, but no red yet.

4 hens, fingers crossed,

Hughster

) I have 4 banties. My roo is black and my 3 hens are white. Then I have all of my designer babies which so far only 5 are from my other roo out of 30ish chicks. Then I have more hatching this weekend and I have some blue and red frizzle banties coming in the 26th with a few other breeds

. Cochins are so awesome!!! They are friendly, good incubators and mommies, and I only have 3 so I'm not sure how to tell a cochin egg from a D Uccle egg so if any one can help me in that department (PM me or something) that would be great

ETA: Not sure but they look dark blue to me
