DH is Dear Husband, or darn Husband, depending on the day.

MIL is Mother-in-Law

SIL is Sister-in-Law

DD is Dear Daughter

DS is Dear Son

I started with a $50.00 Craigslist tractor, which came with chickens, feed, and extra chicken wire, which my friend used to build a run using materials I had around the property. But now I wanted more chickens, and a place to store feed, and since I don't have building skills, I am having the coop built and the little tack room built. It is costing me about $1,200 and when I get the custom combo run/arbor built that will likely cost another 100-200. Having to pay for labor, the costs add up. I understand how free eggs can cause a fortune, but as mentioned by someone else in this thread, if the economy gets worse, having food self reliance is very important.

I know it is hard to swallow, but you must remain calm! LOL! I'll tell you why....Your husband, like mine did, is taking initiative to get it done, he has found that he HAS to be in control and do it his way.....ok....So you gotta let him.... I had started to build mine, myself. I was having fun and using things from friends, family and off classifieds to reuse materials. But my husband decided he wanted to be manly and build it himself, so of course we get extra tools and new materials and the coop plans change. I had to hand it over to him and let HIM worry about the bill because HE is the one racking it up! BUT, after it was finished, he was sooooo proud and likes to show it off. So even though his brother is doing it, it is like he is doing it, it's manly pride, so just let it ride! LOL! No worries! In a few weeks when it is done you will be standing outside watching the humor that chickens are....and loving every minute of it! So give him a kiss, remind him that this is HIS project and that you are proud of him and enjoy your babies!!! (even if they are in your house for 11 weeks like mine were! LOL)

well we went out saturday and bought the lumber , paint, wire and hardware. came to $420. not bad in my opinion since i used to keep saltwater reef tanks and a typical set up would set me back $3000 or more. i accidentally bought 36" hardware cloth instead of 48". the 36" 50 foot roll from lowes was something like $42. so i stopped in a local mom and pop hardware store and checked for the 48" roll there. after not seeing anything close i talked to sales clerk. he looked it up and said that a 25 foot roll of 19 gauge 48" high roll is $14! but he had to order it. so tell him to order me two rolls at that price. i asked if he was sure since what i paid the day before was way more for way less. he assured me it was right, so after returning the roll to lowes and buying there i saved another $14! and with what lumber i will have leftover and return i should come in under $400. also bought three bundles of cedar shingles for the roof and put them on this morning. never hung shingles before but it was a piece of cake!
i didn't take any pictures yet but will when i am done.

Sorry about the people bragging about how cheap they made their coop, your set up is really nice. It's not all about what it cost! It's about the happiness it will bring you. Good job and have fun with your birds

Feeling your pain...my hubby won't used recycled materials either...think it's a man thing!

your coop does seem to carry a high price tag...maybe your BIL could help with the cost?
