I just was talking to my friend and I told him I got my first two eggs today. He let me in on some secret egg farming info!

"You do realize that fresh eggs don't last as long as ones you buy at the store..." I asked him why and these are the three reasons:

1. They give the chickens drugs to make the eggs last longer.
2. They make the chickens have a 29 hour day so the eggs get thicker.
3. The eggs are put through a pasteurization process.

How can I compete with factories like that?

You smile, nod sagely at gramps, and go home to your fresh eggs of course. Who would want to eat old eggs anyways?

You might ask your friend for some documentation, or his source!

I assure you, not all eggs are pasteurized. The ones that are cost about $5 a dozen around here, if you can find them. "so the eggs get thicker" doesn't even make sense. The eggshells, perhaps? Store bought ones are definitely more fragile than mine. As for drugs to make them last longer, I'd sure like to know what drug that is!

Is he trying to sell you a bridge, too?

understand your friends points but I have a few of my own:

*your eggs will taste better
*you will live easier knowing your chickens weren't "egg slaves"
*your eggs will taste better
*your chickens will be much happier with a 24 hour day
*your eggs will taste better
*drugged chickens belong in a band
*your eggs will taste better
*your chickens will have a healthier life not being "caged freaks"
* your eggs will taste better

Just my opinion!!!

and the #1 reason I wanted to get chickens of my own...

I know whats going in them... therefor I know whats coming out of them...ALL NATURAL FRESH EGGS!!!

Hey I've been looking to put a bridge in on the ocean front property I have for sale in Nebraska... how can I contact this fella???

Just Kidding!!!

Sadly there are folks out there who have half-baked info or heard something about something from someone once....

The truth is found in this Mother Earth News article that tested every myth about egg preservation and freshness under the sun!!

I can't find the link to it, but they ate eggs that had been stored in various ways up to a year. They found that farm fresh eggs, stored in the fridge without being washed kept the best of all of the methods, and tasted the same 6 months after being placed in there!

His story about drugs to make them last longer is intriguing but also reeks...

You should offer him the property -- he might bite --
