My Australorp, Star, has been broody for about two weeks, even though she has been in an elevated crate to help break her. I let her free range while I am out and deny her access to the coop and nestboxes. Well the poor thing has been in the crate so long that when she gets to go back in, she hops in her broody jail and sits on her brick. The poor girl, she is one stubborn broody!!

And I thought my latest broody was stubborn!

I knew from past experience with stubborn broodies that they would probably be going broody again right away - one month from when they went broody the first time.

Usually the only real cure for a persistent broody is to let them sit a nest for the duration. This time around, I timed the third broody spell of my stubborn pullet Linda and had fertile eggs all ready for her to sit on.

I don't permit rooster access to my hens because a rooster is just way too hard on them. So two weeks before Linda's current broody date, I mated my Buff Brahma hen and roo. So now Linda is in her first week of hatching five eggs. (I broke one accidentally getting other hens' eggs out of her clutch, and now she's segregated.)
