It's 35mm x 70m, which I guess is about 1 1/2" x 3"?...... I was meant to use 38 x 90 (2x4's) but that's a difficult size to get over here because all our houses are framed with 70mm x 35mm. I was a bit worried whether it would still be strong enough so I contacted the guy who designed it and he said it should be just fine with a little extra bracing. Luckily it doesn't have to keep out bears... just neighbourhood dogs and cats, and maybe a fox (I've heard of them living in our city, but I've never seen signs of them at all).
Thanks for all the encouragement! I'm having so much fun and haven't stopped smiling since I started working on it.
Day 3: Sanded the frame ready to paint. Took me just under an hour.
Day 4: Dug some holes for the piers, struck too many tree roots, realised the slope was too much to deal with without a lot of extra work. Cursed a bit. Cursed some more. Back to the drawing board.
Day 5: Came up with a new location, dug holes, struck tree roots, cursed a bit, cursed some more. Enlisted help from some muscle I had lying around the house.
I now have 8 piers roughly in place and fairly level... will do final levelling and backfilling once I have the frame on top of it.
The new location, waaaaaaaaaay down the back of the yard.
BTW- love cloth diapers! Used them on all 3 of my kids!
So far, it looks like your coop is off to a great start! Can't wait to see more and I think you can totally DO this!!! I have mostly built my coop all by myself, too! Love to see other women building coops! So cool!
ChickinDelight - yes, this little helper, along with his younger sister, will add at least a month to the build time I reckon. Hehe
Hawkeye95 - I've had all three of mine in cloth as well!
I'm only counting the days I actually work on anything coop-related so here's where I'm at now.
Day 6: Decided that since I'd already prepared ground in the old location I may as well cover it up again, so we now have a new garden,
Day 7: Back into it... an hour this morning and help from a ladder and a few clamps, and I'e managed to wrestle the frame into position on the driveway and screw it all together. Once the sun eases off a bit this afternoon I'll finish prepping the blocks, and have DH help me move the frame into it's final resting place. Seeing it like this is so different to seeing it on paper - the size is HUGE compared to what I had imagined. My chooks will be very happy indeed.
