My Geese Can Really Surprise Me

This morning I let the geese out to free range, but went back inside to finish up a project without feeding them. About 30 minutes later I heard someone banging on the metal trash cans where I store the feed by the back door. I didn't think anything about it because the chickens frequently clean up any spills around the trash can. A couple of minutes later there was a tapping at the back door. The gander had climbed up the stairs and was knocking at the back door!

Then, this afternoon I could not find the goslings. I have been letting them free range with the older geese and they have always stayed close to the house, so I was really worried. The older geese have never left the yard, but I found the goslings 1/4 mile away in one of the strawberry fields. They were all together and were easily herded home. I don't know what drew them there, but they had gone a long way for 2 month old goslings for some good eats. I am going to have to keep them penned. If the farmer that owns the field had caught them there, I would no longer have geese.

Have your geese ever done anything that really surprised you?

hahahahaha! That made my day, I love geese!

I can't say mine have surprised me (as of yet) but my Chinese made me tear up when I opened my arms to welcome her over, and she ran up to me, pressed her body hard against mine, wound her neck around mine and put her wings over my arms. I do believe this was a goose version of a hug.

My goose has an old lawn chair cushion for her custom built resting place. Once, when the cushion was hung out to dry on a chair, she grabbed it and dragged it about 25 feet to her resting place. I was really impressed with her - it's a large cushion! Now, she has a spare cushion so there's always a dry one in place for her.

That sounds like a goose! They are determined little guys.
