My girl is lonely.

Hi. I took in 2 abandoned black star hens about 18 months ago. My first chickens. They've been doing fine but I lost one recently. (Not LOST. She only had one wing and fell in my pond close to dark when I was out of earshot.)

Martha seemed really despondent without Abby at first and now, even though she's better, I understand these are social animals and I never intended to just have ONE. (And I'm really tired of eating my dinner outside so she has some company.)

I've called around to shelters and humane societies but either they already ARE forever homes or they simply never get chickens that need a foster home. I had already planned on ordering some black star chicks but I REALLY don't need 10. I was wondering if anyone would like 6 or 7 when I order them. I'm in north Henry County, Georgia.

I'm attaching the last picture I have with Abby. She's the big girl in the background.

Hello Mitzi Fox.
Welcome to BYC.
Yup, more Black Stars are your best bet. They will integrate more easily with your remaining hen Martha.
How many can you house and feed?
I'm fairly sure you could find homes for those you can't cope with but it may take a little time.
If you do decide to get a different breed choose one that looks as close to the Black Stars in size and colouring as you can find.
Meanwhile, if you are prepared to sit outside and eat with Martha then perhaps you might consider reversing and let Martha come inside and eat with you. If you have a hard floor in your kitchen the cleaning up really isn't that bigger deal. I've had a dozen in my kitchen and a quick clean up with a tissue and and cloth with bleach sorts it all out.

Hello and welcome to BYC! :frow Glad you joined.
You don't need to get black stars. I would look on CL or a local FB Poultry group for someone selling pullets and get one, quarantine her for 30 days then integrate her with your lonely hen.
Thank you. Never thought of Craig's List. Was looking for local poultry groups but found this one instead. DID read that about quarantining though.
