as an immediate fix for Martha, if you can rig up a mirror somewhere she frequents, it will offer her a kind of company until you can source and integrate a live friend.

Hello Mitzi Fox.Hi. I took in 2 abandoned black star hens about 18 months ago. My first chickens. They've been doing fine but I lost one recently. (Not LOST. She only had one wing and fell in my pond close to dark when I was out of earshot.)
Martha seemed really despondent without Abby at first and now, even though she's better, I understand these are social animals and I never intended to just have ONE. (And I'm really tired of eating my dinner outside so she has some company.)
I've called around to shelters and humane societies but either they already ARE forever homes or they simply never get chickens that need a foster home. I had already planned on ordering some black star chicks but I REALLY don't need 10. I was wondering if anyone would like 6 or 7 when I order them. I'm in north Henry County, Georgia.
I'm attaching the last picture I have with Abby. She's the big girl in the background.

Thank you. Never thought of Craig's List. Was looking for local poultry groups but found this one instead. DID read that about quarantining though.Hello and welcome to BYC!Glad you joined.
You don't need to get black stars. I would look on CL or a local FB Poultry group for someone selling pullets and get one, quarantine her for 30 days then integrate her with your lonely hen.
Thank you!Hi and welcome to BYCWe're so happy you've decided to join us

Ok. Will check My Pet Chicken. You'd think Georgia would be rife with hatcheries. But I think they're mostly commercial. Some hatcheries will sell fewer chicks. My Pet Chicken has a minimum of 3 chicks. Good luck and have fun...
