*My Girls? What are they?*

My Cayuga started out completely black, but after her first real molt at about 1 year old, she grew in a lot of white feathers and now she's kind of speckly looking. Maybe this is a dumb question... but if a duck's markings are incorrect for their "breed" (like a Swede with white spots in place of a bib, or a Cayuga that isn't solid black), is there really any way to tell for sure? Is there really a correct breed or is it just a matter of opinion? I'm thinking of how Ameraucana/Araucana chicken breeders get all bent out of shape if you call an Easter Egger an Ameracauna... Even though my understanding is that EEs ARE basically Ameracaunas with some flaws. And I have a "pet quality" runner duck who just looks like a slender Khaki Campbell with runner markings... he looks NOTHING like the show quality runners, but he's still supposedly a runner.
