So I decided I want to plant apple trees. I got these things a month and a half ago. And planted them inside my goat pen. I fenced around them so the goats couldn't damage them and the fencing was 4 feet tall. The trees are only 4 to 5 feet tall now but I have this romantic image of goats lazing in the shade of these new apple trees in a few years. I have nigerian dwarves and they can touch the apple trees but I have one saanen cross wether who is determined to take these things down. After a month of leaving them alone, he or one of them did nip some buds off some of the side branches. He goes and chops the top off of one of my trees! I was so mad! This was earlier this week. Then today I let them loose to go in each others pen. I go to get hay come back and h lopped the top off the other one that was growing beautifully javascript:insert_text('

MMMMmmm goat barbecue! Goats are such a stinkin pain sometimes! Sorry about your trees! I thought about putting shock collars on mine
They kept getting into the rhododendron which is POISON to them...you'd think they knew that, but nooooo, they have to eat everything that doesn't eat them first. That was a nasty week of having to medicate
AHHHHH - This is one of those "Live and Learn" things. If a goat can get w/in 10' of and edible plant/tree/shrub, it will find/create a way to eat it. My goats (3 pygmies) have ruined hog wire, poultry wire to fix the holes, that wire w/the "welded" rectangles - just by sticking their noses into the opening and stretching it out until the whole goat body fits through. They get through the wire to the neighbor's house and eat their plants (much to the neighbor's delight
). Electric fencing - following the directions for goat control - is the only thing that may save your trees. That, or just give up on the idea of a beautiful, ideallic fruit tree in THEIR space (which it now is). Good luck wit that!
