My fiancé and I recently purchased 4 golden comets approx 1.5 years old. How can we help the acclimate to their new home, what tips can you give us as new hen owners in the city? We want happy, healthy, laying hens!

We have a makeshift coop set up right now as their coop is being delivered in a couple days. Their coop will have a run, nesting boxes, perch etc. The coop we have set up now has those things, but is an open pin.

Welcome!! Sounds like you will have a nice, safe, area/coop for them to live in. That is a great start.

Check out the site on bedding, there's straw, pine shavings, sand options. I've had chickens since 2009 and have used straw the whole time. It can get a little dusty and messy at times. I'm going to try the pine shavings & DE food grade this winter. I hear that using the pine shavings/DE you only have to change it out 2x a year, instead of every 2-4 weeks.

Get chicken layer food and I would recommend getting good sized feeders and waterers. The water is the most important (I think), if something was to happen they could go a few days without food, but it's the water that is the most important.

Any change you make with your chickens (new coop, different feeders/waters, etc) can interrupt their egg laying. So when that happens just be patient, they will all settle in and be back to laying in no time.

If you get the time, post some pictures of your girls.... everyone loves pictures!!
