im kinda of worried here i have a 4 month what i thought was a brown chinese beacause of the long narrow neck but i was away since sunday to tuesday evening and this morning i went outside to check my geese and my brown chinese instead of a long narrow neck had a thick swollen neck with a bump on his head im not sure whats going on i grabbed him and checked him out closely and felt his neck and it felt like it was full of air should i be concern?

heres a pic notice that lump on his head is that normal?

do ya think maybe he ate something he wasnt suppose to or maybe got stung on the head? i dont know i just hope its nothing serious.

thanks every1 in advance for their input or suggestions!

I really don't know, no experience with that breed.

Does he act OK?

The only thought I had -- 4 months old, maybe puberty has hit and he is starting to "bulk up" and develop other adult characteristics????

well yea in a way heres what i dont know im not sure if its a he or a she im not 100% if its a brown chinese beacause now he/she looks like a african with a fat neck instead of a long narrow neck like the chinese. he/she has been the aggressor in the past and what i mean is he went after my father twice after my father turned away and walked away. he/she is very selfish in the pool does not like sharing the pool with any of the other geese, but it could be he is trying to mount on top of the other geese when they are in the pool or just biting to scare away. in terms of his health condition he/she seems to be eating normal with the other geese i dont see him/her acting any different. but ill keep an close eye on him/her.

That lump on his head look really weird - that's not normal. How long has he had that? Did it develop just from one day to the other?

I have no idea what is is, though.

well i left sunday in the evening but i attended to them in the morning and everything was fine i get back yesterday around 7pm and didnt bother going out in the back till this morning and wham im like what the.......... i seriously thought some1 swapped my goose

anyways was just outside i grabbed him and felt again around his neck and it feels like air nothing solid and that lump on his head seems to be air too. im really scared theres something wrong with him ive had him since he was a lil juvi.... i really cant afford a visit to the vet should i just leave him be and keep feeding him and see if he gets better or?

Well, if its not "normal" then I guess the next question are cause and treatment.

Two things that could cause swelling like that are allergic reaction to a toxin or irritant (bee or wasp sting perhaps) or infection.

If the bird is tame enough, any way you could look through the feathers, especially on the lump on top of the head, and see if you can find something that looks like a sting or bite.

My little girl Rose actually stepped on a bee last night in the clover in the grass. I let them out, and next thing I new, she was holding up and shaking a foot. Then, I saw a bee trying to launch itself up and couldn't out of the grass near her. When I examined her foot, the stinger was still embedded in the web right next to the middle toe. It didn't seem to really swell, but she kept picking at it a while. This morning seemed normal. Then, I was working on moving some stuff in the yard and got stung on the ear by a wasp -- it had a small paper nest in what I was moving and attacked. So, we had a good night for being bitten.

As long as he is fine, eats and drinks and doesn't seem bothered by the swelling I'd just care for him as normal.

The lump and the swollen neck that feels like air might be liquid - like giant blisters - and as Denninmi says, most likely some kind of allergic or toxic reaction.

Could it be a snake bite? It does seem a bit too drastic to be caused by just a bee or a wasp. But maybe he stuck his little head in a wasp's nest and got stung by several of them.

My goose was attacked last summer by bumble bees. I was weeding near their nest, and suddenly the goose screamed - they were all over his head, buzzing like crazy. I just picked him up and ran. I don't know whether they got to bite or sting him, he didn't get any swelling after the incident.

well its his whole neck too i pray to god it goes away and its not something too serious:(

My goose has the same thing happening to him/her. It's only two months old and I'm worried. Did anything bad happen to yours? This is the only thing online that I've found that's the same thing that's going on with my bird. It's a brown Chinese goose like yours.

We have a goose that looks just like the one in the picture. If you are talking about the "black" knob on its head.....I think it's supposed to be there???
