My grocery store eggs are developing! *time for Lockdown*

Candled the eggs for my SIL this afternoon...so cool. Got some pics of the day 7 embryo. Definately bigger and easier to see than the day 6 embryos. These are two different eggs.

I have a question too. I thought that one of the eggs was a dud but I'm seeing an embryo and veining...but also a blood spot/meat spot (??) floating around freely. Is this something that should be culled or will it be OK?

Here is the best video I got...all the chickies were moving but this was the best video I could get. It's the most porous of all the eggs, so I hope it can hatch ok.

Today marks day 11...we're more than halfway baked! YAY!

I'm turning these eggs by hand and, I have to say, what a difference I've noticed in their weight and 'sturdiness' lately.

We had one dud...developed to maybe 3 or 4 days and then stopped for whatever reason. I placed that egg on my kitchen counter while I tried to decide what to do with it. Put it in the trash? Bury it? I wasn't sure.

My two young adult brothers came over and I picked it up to show them, with the baby on my hip, and noticed a huge crack across the broad end! Ick! It was weeping something...gross. It was unmarred and smooth when I brought it up. Suddenly I was terrified that it would explode in my hands, all over me and the baby! I tried to give to both of my brothers, in a desperate attempt to get it out of my hands. LOL. They, of course, saw my panic and wouldn't touch it. Into the garbage bag it went.

Not the ideal situation...it didn't survive but I would have liked to show it more respect than the garbage bag. Oh well...now I know I have to plan for this. It didn't occur to me before.

What do you do with your quitters, if you feel badly about throwing them out?

That's pretty funny! As for the respect an egg should have, I think it isn't a bad idea to take a cue from nature. When eggs go bad in a nest, the mama nudges the thing out without a thought. Plop onto the ground it goes. I think the garbage is probably a fine place for a weeping, gross, dead egg.

I'm sentimental to a fault, when it comes to my babies.

Here's a crappy pic of Day 11's candling. What little wigglers they all are now!!! Today's egg looks like the air sac is pretty big? Maybe not? Too little humidity? It was really active today.

I was silly when I started these eggs...not thinking that they'd develop. We are moving on Saturday and these eggs are due to hatch on Sunday. Luckily, we have possession of our new house, so yesterday DH and I moved the incubator from the old house to the new house...about a 40 minute drive. With 3 kids in the car. Ick.

I put a mason jar full of hot water in the incubator as a heat sink, taped up all the holes, and padded the eggs with my cloth diapers (hahaha, poor baby shares his bums with the birds. They'll be sterilized before used again). I kept the therm in the window and carried it on my lap.

We were successful!! Maintained a temp between 100.0 and 100.7. Plugged it in when we arrived and never lost a beat!! It wavered at 99.2 for a brief moment before pulling back up to 100.5. YAY!!!!

Anyway, lockdown starts today with a hatch expected on Sunday. Keep your fingers crossed for us!
