I have been reading on BYC about predators getting into runs and coops and killing your dear friends, but I knew that mine were safe in their hardware cloth pen elevated three feet off the ground. I was wrong. I just went to give my girls their morning fruit and hugs, and my Cookie was laying in pieces around the pen. Crumb was making very sad noises, and allowed me to pick her up for the first time ever.

These girls were so funny together. Crumb was the runt, and she followed Cookie everywhere, and did everything Cookie did. Now she is alone at six weeks, and I don't know what to do.

(The only thing I can figure is that something squeezed between the tin roof and the beam. I'm going to send Crumb to a safer home until I can get this fixed.)

So sorry to hear about your hen. I go to bed everynight praying that all of mine will be okay. I think no matter what we do, hens will always be vulnerable. :aww

I am so sorry. We get so attached to our pets Don't we? Our one and only gosling hatched on Mothers Day (of all days) and just last week a hawk got into the barn, landed on his cage and though it didn't get in, he scared the poor little thing to death. My daughter is still crying over him. I wish I knew more comforting words to say. Fortuantly almost everyone here on BYC has been through some sort of predator attack and can relate.

:aww Robinaggie, I've heard it said that loss hurts so much because we love so much, and that is indeed true. I'm so very sorry for your loss, and for Crumb's loss as well. I know she will miss her buddy. I hope you can fix the gap or wherever the predator was able to gain access, and that Crumb will soon be back home. I hope you can find a new little buddy for Crumb. It would never, of course, replace Cookie, but would instead be a tribute to her and your love for her. Again, I hope your heart heals and you can enjoy and treasure your memories of Cookie.

My goodness, how heartbreaking. Is there anyway you can bring her in the house until you get it fixed. I would hate for you to lose her too. Praying your heart will heal!

:hugsMy sincere sympathy goes out to you. I hope your pain passes as quickly as it can. I know that losing a pet, even a chicken, is hard. I just lost one of my first and favorite hen on Tues. and I've cried everyday since. Know that as long as you have BYC, you are not alone.
