My hen escaped and came back badly injured

Okay - this has absolutely no medical or even logical value, but I can't resist sharing my Dad's response to a chicken poo comment ...

Dad: Do you know what that white stuff is in chicken schmitt?
Me: (long drawn out explanation)
Dad: Nope
Me: ??
Dad: That's chicken schmitt, too ...

Ya gotta love 'im!

OMG, that made me laugh so hard I started crying. Thats something that my dad would have said! Thank you so much for sharing that!

I have heard cooked white rice will form up poop, but it has pretty much zero nutritional value, so your call. :)

Sounds like you're talking about what we call "okai" rice ... My Mom's (Japanese although she's Korean, ha ha My Dad's Japanese) old age fix for an upset tummy/diarrhea. Medium grain white rice (sticky rice) cooked, then put in a pot with water about an inch or more above the rice & boil. The boiling removes the starch (water turns from clear to opaque). Cool some & drink the water :hit Sometimes she'd make us eat the rice w/water :hit Hated having to eat it but it worked

Wait, so it gets cooked twice?

Sure does ... Cook it like you normally would, when let it sit for a bit. Scoop some out into a pot, fill with more water than rice then BOIL. Let it boil until you see the water get "cloudy" which is the starch from the rice. Thicker the better, cool enough to drink the water :hit Hold your breath, may help going down. We used the water for babies too, just needed to make the nipple bigger. You can eat the Okai Rice put some shoyu/soy sauce to taste, it helps some.

I have rice in the fridge that I give to the birds once in a while just as a treat. Should I give it to her as it is or boil it again and give her the water?

Why not ... Put the cooked rice in a pot, make sure there's more water than rice, BOIL until you see the water "cloudy" & thicken. You could give her rice with the water but soupy mix. If you give her just the water, keep an eye cause she may think it's food & gobble instead of drink. The water is the "starchy" part but the rice helps it go down easier :gig Try tasting it :hugs

@ChickNanny13 - thanks for the how-to on okai rice. We've been using boiled rice for years (the classic BRAT diet - bananas, rice, applesauce, toast), but I never knew I should be cooking it twice. Hopefully, I won't need it for awhile, but when I do ... I'll be ready!

And @MindiWynne - If you liked Pop's chicken schmitt assessment, then you'll love his latest ... No chickens ... but ... Pop was hospitalized two weeks ago with a heart issue. We thought we'd lost him, but within hours, modern medicine worked his wonder, and he was admitted for some more tests and treatments. We knew he was going to be okay when the night nurse asked him if he was diabetic, and his dead-pan response was, "No. I'm Italian."
