Hello. My hen, Saki, of 5-6 months, has several problems. 3 weeks ago, I started to see that her crop was big. I ignore it a little because Kero, when he was younger, had it too sometimes (Kero is my rooster. I only have them both. Kero is like 5 months older).

I have always hold her to pet her and kiss her, but I started to notice a smell like a dead cat. I didn't thing it was her, I just think she got dirty.

After that, I noticed how Saki had stopped flying, so my mother and I thought it was because of the big crop.

I looked over that, right here, then we gave her oil and we massaged her crop only a few times because she didn't wanted to open her mouth and we couldn't make her.

We thought she will got better.

A while passed and it remained the same. She had a big crop and was no longer flying and hardly ran. The crop just seemed to get a little bigger each time. Also, we began to notice that a lump grew in the upper part of the wing. I got to thinking that her wing was bad and that was why she was not flying anymore.

Saki walked slower and slower.

A couple of days ago, the lump that was in the wing burst. I have no idea what it was but it looked really bad.

My mother and I checked her more, we raised her wing and saw that HUGE thing at her side. It was horrible. It never occurred to us to lift the wing ...

Saki looks very bad and sad. Someone told us that she probably ate something, that we should gave her ampicillin. I just gave her that an hour ago, because we did not have money yesterday. But I don't know if really that's it, it looks terrible. I want to think about that, but I know it's better to know what she really have and try to treat it.

I can't go to the vet. I don't have any money and I do not know any close. Could you tell me what she have and what to do?

Thanks so much for reading. I am extremely distressed and I am not sure if I am writing well, because besides being nervous, I do not speak English very well. Thank you again.

Greetings EnidLavellan,

First thing I want you to do is, take a deep breath. Let peace be in you. You are doing your best to help Saki.

Saki could have one of two things that come to my mind right now.

The first and worst, is Marek's disease, the skin form. This could be a tumor that affects the feather follicles. This is contagious and a chicken can die from it. There is no cure, but if it is the skin form, some chickens do recover. But they will be carriers for life. So, you will not want to get any more chickens. They will get infected too. Your rooster has been exposed too. Always wash your hands after handling her.

The second thing it could be, is an abscess. An abscess is an infection under the skin. She could have injured herself, and then it got infected. Being under the wing made it worse.

If you have some peroxide, pour it on the wound. Then apply some Neosporin ointment, or some other antibacterial ointment. Just make sure the ointment doesn't have a pain reliever. Apply the antibacterial ointment daily, till it heals.

I think the Ampicillin will help her, if it was an abscess. I would continue the Ampicillin for at least 7 days. You should see some improvement in her condition by tomorrow.

Feed her some cooked meat protien or cooked eggs, diced fruit, diced black or red grapes, fresh greens, cooked grains like: brown rice, wheat berries, oat groats, pearl barley, also some toast with butter is good. Always offer her moist feed daily.

She should have soft foods while healing and also if she has crop problems.

If you have probiotics, give her some. Also, some poultry vitamins.

Clean fresh water daily.

If she develops any other symptoms, like paralysis of the legs or wings, she may have Marek's. Only time will tell.

I will say a little prayer for her tonight that it is not Marek's.

These are my thoughts based on what you described and what I see in the pictures.

Other BYC members may have different opinions and advice. You should consider them too.

God Bless to you and Saki. :hugs
