For the past week since I discovered my hen has a significant prolapsed vent I have scoured the Internet for information and experiences, treatments and outcomes. Lots of information, some of it conflicting. Sadly, I have not read one successful story though where the hen was not culled or died. Is there anyone out there can share their story of success? Is there any hope for my girl? :(

I am sorry for your troubles. Have you separated your poor mama?

A good soak in warm water mixed with Epsom salts can relieve the inflammation and allow the vent to slip back in (might take a few soaks).

You can also rub Preparation H on her vent to help with irritation and swelling, too.

They say that once a prolapse occurs that it's a matter of time before it happens again... and there's no way to tell.

Whether or not to cull is entirely your decision. I say if you're able to successfully treat her, see how it goes. She may never prolapse again, or it may happen again the next day.

I hope that helps!
