This morning I went to check on eggs because everyone was clucking loudly. I found my hen Bananito straining in the nest box to pass an egg. She finally passed it but her vent got prolapsed, I don't know what to do but I separated her already because I didn't want anyone pecking her prolapse. Any advice on what to do? I don't want to lose her :hit

Can you post pictures?

Can you give her an Epsom salt bath, and slather the tissue with water based lube. You need to keep it moist at all times. See if it will go back in on its own. Also give her some calcium citrate to help with contractions.

@Wyorp Rock @azygous @Eggcessive any additional suggestions?

Working on pictures... What is calcium citrate and where do you get it?
What kind of water based lube? I'll be digging out my epsom salt... Thank you for replying so quickly! :jumpy

!!! HUGE MIRACLE UPDATE !!!
Bananito's prolapsed tissue went back in when I went to take pictures. I'm still keeping her isolated until I know for sure! If it happens again, what do I do? Also, what would be the issue for this round of prolapse? How do I prevent prolapsed vent? Thanks for your help!:wee

Great news! Calcium citrate is available at all Wal Mart target and pharmacy. Lube would be what you can find in the personal hygiene section, just make sure it's water based.

If you can keep her semi dark room for the next 12 hours or so and keep an eye on her to see if she prolapses again.

Yay! I'm already keeping her in a semi-dark cage, I'll be going to town to get those things if she prolapses again. Thank you yet again!

:ya

Also how would you give the calcium citrate? Orally?
Yes, orally. Im right handed, I have the chicken on my left thigh facing out then use my left hand to pry her beak open and slip the pill in on the side of her beak with my right hand, leave her left wing free if you can, it helps calm them, watch her swallow. Sometimes they spit it out.

If she fights you, wrap her in a towel and then pry her beak open and stuff the pill in on the side , It's a big pill but don't worry, they eat bigger things than that .

Ok. Once I was trying to give my chicken arnica and she wouldn't eat it, even when I hid it with something she really likes to eat. She even made a point of getting it out and threw it to the side. :D
