I would not add rescue chickens to my flock. That is asking for troubles big time.
I had a rough rooster last two years, he never was agressive to me, and from the time he was a year old, I never lost a hen to a predator in rough country. But he was rough with the girls, and they adored him, go figure? I think bare backs often bother people more than they bother chickens. That being said, if it is cause a problem in open sores, then the rooster needs to kept away from the hens. I tried the saddles, but could not keep them on for more than a few days.
That roo was caught twice by a bobcat, and did not live the second time. Now I have a BA roo, he barely ruffles a feather, and he is only 8 months old..... but he is a bit more aagressive towards me than I would like. He does not like anything red, even though he has been fed with a red feed bucket his entire life?
I personally don't think you will be too happy with a flock of chickens, if you cannot make decisions in the best interest of your flock verses the life of an individual chicken. Chickens act like chickens and sometimes it is not real nice.
