My hen hacked one egg. It started on Monday night and when I went to check on Tuesday he was on the ground. Thought he was dead but warmed and dried him and he seems right as rain. Why would she kick her kid out. There is no way he could have fallen out!

She may have to many? Dont have chickens but ive known a hen to do that

It was her only egg. No we got him by himself in box with a light. He is doing well! He is a cross between a blue silky and a RI..he/she is all black.

How do you sex a chick

Yeah, they do kick them out sometimes--almost just get sick of them and give them the boot. Sometimes they fall out, but it's good you have separated her. Can't really sex silkies...have to wait till they crow or lay! So, I'm not sure about a mix!

animal mothers know when a baby is weak or sickly and probley wont make it. so that might be why she did that.

maybe he talked too much??

never had a broody do that, all of ours have been great mommas

My Silkie went broody for the first time, so I gave her some eggs to sit on. When the first one hatched, I didn't discover it soon enough and she pecked it to death. I took the rest of her eggs and put them under a first time Americana banty and they hatched today. Just to be safe I put all the chicks in my brooder box, although I think the Americana would have been a good mom. Didn't want to chance it, tho and lose more chicks. I will never trust a Silky again, as far as being a good mama.

I took the chick away and he is doing awesome. Want to take him to the horse show this weekend as he is now my favorite:we:lol:ee
