My hen lost half of her toe..... **UPDATED AGAIN**

It can be done pretty quick and then it's over. Without trimming, the bone will turn black, the skin won't heal over it, and this will go on for a long while. It will help if you have a partner to keep her tight in the towel so she can't move . They really don't seem to mind as much as they don't like being held wondering what the heck is going on

Okay I just trimmed it off...I used a pair of nail clippers instead though. the bone was flat where it broke off and it was alot easier using the clippers. I didnt even have to hold her down, she just stood there. I put the bandage back on so I guess we'll see in a few days if any new tissue starts to grow back. I'll post some more pictures as she recovers! thanks everyone!

Its been almost 6 days now and I'm not sure how her toe/leg is doing. the area has been kept uncovered now for a day and a half and the wound is all dried up. (she would not keep the bandage on) the stubb of the toe is slightly swollen as well as the joint. But the rest of toes and the leg look great. She is not wanting to put any weight on the foot but I'm sure its very sore. Her appetite is great. In fact a few minutes ago she ate a whole boiled egg and small bowl of oatmeal mixed with water and milk. Do you think she will end up being okay or am I trying for nothing??

if the area is swollen and feels warm or hot to the touch then she has an infection.
if it feels very cold then it could be the swelling is cutting off circulation.

I haven't read thru all the pages, but she should be on some kind of antibiotic.
you could apply some neosporin to the toe.

I recently saw advertised on TV a new ointment available at Walmart that specifically treats staph and, I think, strept infection.
"Staph...something.."

ask the pharmacist on duty.

update: I just googled walmart..they are not showing this product on the web site..it's a new product and might not be available in all stores yet.
I will keep an eye out for the ad, and make a note.

Slight swelling and warmth is to be expected during the healing phase of an injury. It's called the "inflammatory phase" and the swelling is related to cells reproducing rapidly to cause healing. Do not be concerned over slight swelling and extra warmth, it just means everything is well. If the injury is very swollen and hot then there might be a problem.

I just saw your pics and is the bone still jutting out a bit at the end? How many days has that been open? The wound still seems kind of weepy because I see spots on the paper towel.

If she doesn't want the bandage to be left on redo the bandage and then put a baby sock over her foot and then a piece of the tape you use at the top, tight but not to tight. I used this on my hen when she hand bumblefoot.
