Iv had my buff Orpington cross rhode island red since it was a few weeks old along with 4 pol hens. To cut a long story short a fox or cat took all the chickens bar this one ( the one thats never layed an egg) so it was on its own for a while I didn't notice The comb and wattles getting bigger at the time. I decided to get another two hens because I thought this one was lonely as soon as Introduced the two new hens (red sex link and an amber star) I noticed a massive difference in size. About two weeks later I woke up and heard a cockerel crowing so I went to the garden and it was him/her. I'm still in shock :p

Is it possible for a cockerel to take this long to mature?
I've also heard hens can go through a 'sex change' due to a damaged ovarie could this be the case?

Btw it hasnt yet got any spurs.

I'm trying to upload some pictures of it but I can't seem to do it on my iPad, il try and figure it out ASAP.

! Pleased you joined us! I've not heard of a rooster not crowing until a year but anything is possible. Just make sure you don't have a crowing hen!! Again, anything is possible!!

Hello and welcome from Ohio...so glad you joined BYC

Hope you get the mystery figured out. Nothing I love more than hearing a rooster crow. I have 3 of them !

That's just creepy to me....but over my fear I've never seen any rooster take a year to crow and mature but good luck. I have a rooster but he is pretty young right now, his feathers r white so he has a long way to go but I am on my iPad too, just to let ya know :p
