At the minute i am borrowing my neighbours broody hen(i don't know the breed sorry) but on saturday night i put 9 eggs in with her (by the way she is quite a big hen) but i went out and checked on her on sunday morning and she was sitting on 5 and the other 4 were sitting quite a bit away from her so i was worried incase the eggs would get cold which lead to me bringing out my old incubator but i was trying to do this hatch with a hen i hatched chicks last year and got four out of six with a broody hen so later on on sunday i thought i would try and put two eggs into see if she would sit on them and if she did i would put the other two in aswell so i reached in and set one down and she pecked it and completely smashed it i was kinda confused and so i decided to go and put the other one back into the incubator and i just wanted to know y she would of done this and if i should try again later during the incubation stages thanks :)

That is pretty strange. My broody hens make sure everything that even looks like an egg in a miles distance is rolled up under them. I atually have trouble with them stealing the eggs laid by the other chickens...

I think you should keep the egg in the incubator for the rest of the incubation. A determined broodyhen wouldnt show this kind of behaviour, and a poor broodyhen (even if she in fact is broody) doesnt make the best momma-hen anyways. Besides, I'm sure your babychicks will do well artificially incubated as well :) Good luck!
