My hens have black insects attached to their combs and wattles.

You can look for one of these products:

Where are you located? They should have it at feed stores like Tractor Supply and Amazon carries several brands of 10% permethrin too.
I am in Fuerteventura in the Canaries, we have a Co-Opativo that sells goods for chickens, cats and dogs, we get our point of lay chickens from them when they get them delivered from the breeder and layers pellets also, they do other things too like hay etc. But iv never seen any medication or sprays there. x

Most animal feed or supply stores for cattle, sheep, goats, or horses would sell similar products. Post here if you need advice as to which ones are safe in poultry. Permethrin garden dust is popular for treating vegetable gardens in the US.

Have you been able to find something local yet?
Not yet but am going to the Co-Opativo on Monday to get some layers pellets so will ask them then. I have got rid of all bedding and have scrubbed all sleeping units, roosting posts, water bowls etc with a watered solution of bleach that can be used to disinfect food etc. i have also raked out the coop and pen and will burn all tonight. I have brushed on the combs and wattles a spray that the vet gave me so hoping that might be ok. x
