The "grid cap" is right there in the section with the other 3" pieces of PVC fittings. It sort of looks like the lid to a Pringles potato chip tube on steroids. It fits inside the bottom of the Y-fitting. I added the little circle of screen to it so chick crumbles wouldn't fall through the grid. Layer pellets wouldn't, but my girls are still on crumbles. You just need to go to the hardware store and play around with the pieces - sort of like playing with Tinker Toys or an erector set. I used the 3" PVC, but Katythechickenlady made hers out of 4". She used the J-fittings, but the idea for the Y-fittings came from her and I prefer those. You can see them at Post #24 on this thread:

I'm feeding six Light Brahmas with one in the coop. Started them at 4 weeks and the height was fine resting on the floor of the coop. Will probably put a brick under it when they get taller. I should think that one 4" PVC feeder would work fine for 8-10 hens. Most I've ever had at the feeder is two at a time and I've never had any squabbles over sharing it. If you decide to put it out in the run, be sure to protect it from rain.
BTW: if you do a search on "PVC feeder" you'll find more ideas and some different designs that you might prefer.
