My homemade auto waterer

Cost was about $20 in parts and about 10 minutes to make. I can post more information if anyone is interested.

It connects to a garden hose with a float in a 5 gallon bucket and water is siphoned into the drinking bucket.

The parts

Just double checking. It's not a siphon effect, but a pressure equalization... The tubing is twirled at the bottom of the bucket, yes?

Interesting idea.. I'm still planning out mine.

Nope. purely siphon. I'd just gotten home and the sun had already set so I just threw it together.

It works, but I'll make it better tomorrow. The excess clear tubing is currently just coiled at the bottom of the bucket.

Yeah... Ok.. But how does it not break the siphon while filling... Oh.. wait..

Ok, I had a duh moment... Basically it's the same as an overflow on a sump style aquarium filter where both sides equalize and hold pressure in the tube.

Don't you worry about the garden hose remaining under pressure? Seems like it will burst, especially in the heat of summer.

How many chickens are you watering?

Seems like a 5gal bucket would hold them for a little while and you could just fill it each day.

Are they really drinking up 5 gal of water per day?

Cool! I've been wanting to make an auto waterer and hadn't gotten around to figuring out how I wanted to do it. Here in NM the air is so dry that not only do the birds drink a lot but there is also evaporation to contend with. Water goes bye-bye fast!
