My homemade auto waterer

Great idea!

The only hoses that I use for waterers are the white RV/Marine hoses that are meant for potable drinking water because the warning labels on the other hoses say not to drink from them. I figure if I shouldnt drink from them than neither should the birds that provide my food.

All my coops have automatic waterers (all are float systems) and I put in a shut off for each one plus a shut off at the manifold where all the hoses attach to the pipe. I keep all shut off most of the way off to reduce the pressure on the hoses.

after I flush them out though. The problem is only if you let the water stand in them because it could leech lead - so I guess you are right it would affect your constantly-on hoses!! Good thing to think about!

In which case I will be watering my birds the same way I water my dog & cats, by letting the water flush out of the hose, then rinsing out their bucket, THEN filling it up. No water standing in the hose for extended periods.

eggchel,

can you post pics of your system? Maybe start a thread... don't want to hijack this one. I am building some runs and I am always looking for a better way of doing things ..like the idea posted here.. very creative!
thank you

So exacty how will the syphon hose be attatched? perhaps leaving a good amount of excess curled in the bottom would suffice to keep the hose in place?

If I make one of these it will be positioned near the water bowl so the hose won't need to be very long. Can the bucket be closed to prevent stuff from getting inside. We live in a windy area and paper and plastic bag debris always blowing into our yard

Before any of you buy those three brass fittings, you should know you can use just one if you use the right toilet supply hose. Buy one that has a 1/2" FIP (female inside pipe thread) on the opposite end from the valve. Then you can use one fitting to go from 1/2"FIP to 3/4" female garden hose thread. I'll get the part number for you Friday. Lowes actually gives me two days off in a row!

BTW, I'm working on an idea for one which will rinse itself as it fills. Stay tuned!
