My hubby got laid off - need some advice....

Here is the one I am using...

Powdered Laundry Detergent

2 cups Zote Soap (finely grated)
1 cup Washing Soda
1 cup Borax
1 cup dollar store oxyclean (from Dollar Tree)

* Mix well and store in an airtight plastic container.
* Use 2 tablespoons per full load.

thank you all so much and i can't wait to try the at home laundry detergent! we are lucky enough to have some friends that just butchered a cow so we think we are going to get some meat from him. i don't know now that i have, well kinda slept-it was a rough night-i feel a little better my dh is giong to look into daycare while he is at school. i just hope my DD isn't one of those kids that he has to be called out of class for, not bc of her being bad, but bc she has never been left with anyone else. she will just have to get over it, i think i will do her some good. once agian thank you, and i know times arn't good for almost everyone right now but i am glad to know we are not the only ones. i hope everyone in my siduation does well with what they have and keep bringing the good ideas!!

hey aeg1001!

i'm in a small town in ohio also and my hubby was laid off about 2 months ago and we are LOVING IT! we got our property about a year ago and are doing all the projects we wanted and using our time wisely.

here are some thoughts:

* make sure that you get the additional unemployment if you/baby are considered dependents. initially we did NOT get this but appealed.

* have any bad health habits? drink? smoke? drink soda? now is the time to get healthy and dump all of that - use the time to walk and get in shape.

* dont forget all the 'free' stuff to feed your chickens! ask at the local stores, bakery, restaurants if they have stuff they cant sell. i got tons of stuff from farmstands who didnt want to carry it home or have it hauled off. i've stopped at neighbors and asked if i can pick up their apples etc.. usually they are glad not to have to mow over them. use grass clippings for the hens and let them free range- i usually only feed at nite

*craigslist has a great farm and garden section - be on the lookout for deals and ask people if they will make you a deal...or see if they are willing to trade

* dont have a church? find one. there are churches that have programs for low income folks or low cost groceries. it will also be good for your peace of mind to feel like part of a community

* whatever you do - dont turn against each other. you know that gal who stands there and nags her man? dont be her. get your frustrations out before either of you is ready for a fight. be in this TOGETHER and fight the problem - not each other

and last - turn everything into a positive.. what a great chance for him to change his career! what a great time of year to be laid off - get outside and enjoy the summer! spend time together and understand that very rarely will have have an opportunity like this. enjoy every second

good luck!

I've been praying my husband gets laid off for a few months now!!! I know it sounds strange, but there is so much work and projects we'd like to do around here and the summers are so short that the only solution at this point would be for him to get laid off. Too bad it doesn't look like it will happen yet.

I have been a saver all my life. I believe the time to prepare for a disaster is BEFORE it strikes. We spent the first 20 years of our marriage living as if we were unemployed and down right poor while our friends were out dining, shopping and generally consuming. My child never had what the other kids did and always complained about it, but I think simplicity builds character. Yes, we gave up some fun in our youth, but the house is paid for and I'm prepared for life to throw what it may at us now.

Sometimes I think this economy is good for the soul. I would like to see many more people start to save money and be more self sufficient. I think people may even enjoy life and each other more when there is less stuff.

I wish everyone out there in this economy good health and much love and let's all look out for each other!

I have been laid off a few times I worked in Bufffalo-See me comming to your department you knew budget cuts were comming.

It works different in other areas but here there are tons of Services
including 12 credits at Kent state if your laid off here--
I didn't use daycare either - My husband worked days and I worked Nights my kids did not know I worked - Here we also have One -Stop which houses everything a laid off person can use--

I kinda figured since I was on unemployment I was being paid to find a job so 8 hours a day I job hunted - You didn't list or I missed the type of job your husband had but I hope he finds something --

As far as openning a daycare center good idea - Cost isn't a lot for the first kids - the problem is finding clients that will respect you as a working individual so being professional is the key -- most states( and anyone can correct that if your state is different) the first 4 kids do not require a permitt----

I am though one of the people who wants to jump through the tV and strangle most of the talk show people on this subject.

There are jobs out there they just aren't glams
the jobs that are there are working jobs - every Nursing home in your area has a job it just maybe in housekeeping or dietary -
tell him good luck and wish you guys the best

FWIW: You don't need a bread machine to make bread. In fact I've never used one so wouldn't know how to. I mix mine last thing at night and let it rise so that I can bake it in the morning. Works great and tastes great too. There are lots of recipes on the net for hand-kneaded bread, so don't let the loss of the machine stop you!

That is awesome gotta learn that!

My BF decieded to go back to college which he needs to he is very intelligent. He has all this extra time and might as well go. I work weekends and he worked the week so we actually didnt get to spend any time together to until he got laid off. We cut back on a lot of eating out. We would rather fish anyways lol!

I just spent 3 years in college helping people fill out thier FAFSA (I was put in charge of the CDE Interns due to my scheduling quirk). He needs to fill it out NOW (June 30th flips the year and during the overlap schools can use the one that gets him the most pell grant/ better loan deals). Have him pick out a school, even if it's the local community college, and enroll, he can transferr credits later if need be), with him unemployed your EFC should be very low (I expect $0), and any "leftover" funds from his pell grant will be a check for you, while you're at it, is there a night class you may want to take? If you want a better explaination, PM me and I can talk you through it.

Make sure you appily for food stamps as well, this IS an emergency situation, and this is why you've paid taxes for these programs (note if you are accepted, you will get tuition breaks).

Note, if anyone else has a questions about how it's done, send a PM at this point I have it down pretty well.
