hey aeg1001!
i'm in a small town in ohio also and my hubby was laid off about 2 months ago and we are LOVING IT! we got our property about a year ago and are doing all the projects we wanted and using our time wisely.
here are some thoughts:
* make sure that you get the additional unemployment if you/baby are considered dependents. initially we did NOT get this but appealed.
* have any bad health habits? drink? smoke? drink soda? now is the time to get healthy and dump all of that - use the time to walk and get in shape.
* dont forget all the 'free' stuff to feed your chickens! ask at the local stores, bakery, restaurants if they have stuff they cant sell. i got tons of stuff from farmstands who didnt want to carry it home or have it hauled off. i've stopped at neighbors and asked if i can pick up their apples etc.. usually they are glad not to have to mow over them. use grass clippings for the hens and let them free range- i usually only feed at nite
*craigslist has a great farm and garden section - be on the lookout for deals and ask people if they will make you a deal...or see if they are willing to trade
* dont have a church? find one. there are churches that have programs for low income folks or low cost groceries. it will also be good for your peace of mind to feel like part of a community
* whatever you do - dont turn against each other. you know that gal who stands there and nags her man? dont be her. get your frustrations out before either of you is ready for a fight. be in this TOGETHER and fight the problem - not each other
and last - turn everything into a positive.. what a great chance for him to change his career! what a great time of year to be laid off - get outside and enjoy the summer! spend time together and understand that very rarely will have have an opportunity like this. enjoy every second
good luck!
