Well we found a peacock at the Maquoketa swap today. Only paid $30 for it and a nice rabbit cage they had it in. Hes a pretty boy. Hubby was so excited. We named him Pandemonium Sp? and are calling him Pan. He doesn't have any long tail feathers. Hubby didnt ask why, and I was busy selling things. We also dont know how old he is, I read I should be feeding game bird feed. Will layer feed and crack corn do till monday?
We have him in a 5' x6' pen in the garage and he has settled down on the straw although I put a perch in for him. How long will he have to be penned before we can turn him loose? Will he stick around with out peahens? and What is a good price to pay for peahens?

Thanks
Melissa

Could you post pictures of him so we can see how old he is and what kind of peahens to have you look for??, if he is an 09 hatch I wouldn't turn him loose for 3 or 4 months, but some folks will say 3 to 6 weeks but I don't think that is long enough. If he is India Blue then 09 hens should be $30.00 to $45.00 but it also depends on where you live, just remember they will not lay til they are 2 yrs old and not all peahens start at 2 some will start at 3. Layer feed will be fine, you may also want to worm him with Safe Guard for goats 2 to 3 cc to a gallon of water you can also worm your chickens the same way just don't eat the eggs for about 2 weeks after worming

The only pic I have was taken with my cell phone its very small and blurry I will try to get better ones in a couple days. he looks like an Indian blue to me, but I don't realy know. He doesn't have a train at all. no eye feathers almost looks like he use to though... Very pretty Blue head and nice thingys on his head ( i dont know what they are called those little stalk things that stand up on there heads? ) He really wasn't to upset with us grabbing him out of his cage and snapping a pic when DH was holding him. Didn't real make much noise just a Click kind of noise.
I will get pictures as soon as I can. Glad to hear we can feed layer feed, didnt want to have to start buying Gamebird feed for one peacock!

Thanks again
Melissa

I went out today to do chores and Pan was gone! he had pushed the chicken wire out and flown out of the top of the 9' high pen

We saw him up on the hill behind our house, but knew we had little to no chance of catching him and were afraid we would just scare him farther away. Is there any chance he will stick around? no one in the vacinity has peafowl that we know of. Im hoping he comes back. Hubby was very sad.

Melissa,
Not sure if he will stick around since you dont have any other pea's, but leave food out for him in several places, and make sure water is available. That will up your chances he will stay around, leave the food in some places that is up off the ground too.

He might come around for that, just make sure food is readily available as much as possible. And some scratch too, they love scratch!

Good luck, hon.

Well Pan is a good peacock! He stayed over the hill for two days just kinda right in sight but out of our yard. Yesterday he kept coming down into the yard but if we went outside he went back over the hill. Today he has been in the garage (chicken coop) two or three times is eating with the chickens and guineas and ducks. And stays around though at least 10' away even when we are out there. The guineas dont even mess with him! I love our peacock, he is awesome! He has alot of white on his breast though, do Indian blue usually have that? Been trying to get a good picture all day, but he turns around as soon as he sees the camera and I have alot of pictures of his butt!

If he doesn't have any white anywhere else, like on wings, back, under the beak.. he might be a year old or younger. Boys start out with a white patch under the neck, this same area is a buff or very light buff on girls(and stays that way forever)... this area eventually gets dark colored feathers peppering throughout and eventually becomes solid colored when the male is 2 or 3.

If he does have white on other areas, he may be pied, split white or ?? those can have white areas in the breast permanently.

really peacocks will mate with guineas? what would that look like! I'll have to check feathersite and see if its on there. Maybe thats why hes sticking around then.
