Havent read the whole thread but tell DH that your kids boogers that they eat on a constant basis has more germs/bactieria that a chick will! LOL

That will be a very nice brooder for the chicks (once you get the heat lamp to keep 'em warm) and eventual isolation 'jail' for single grown birds later.

Take a look at the coop design section of the forum, you will need to get started building a coop/shed that has at least 4 square feet per bird, and 10 square feet per bird for outside run space.

Congratulations on your new additions.

So far I have just read the first page. There are illnesses that can pass from chickens to humans, but as has been said, wash hands after handling and before eating and they should be fine. Too little contact with germs is more unhealty than reasonable contact (the immune system cannot build protection against things to which there is no exposure). If he still worries, ask your pediatrician for his professional opinion. BTW, our pediatrician keeps chickens--and his kids help with the chicken chores.

Some studies show that children raised on farms have less allergies than children reared in extra-clean environments!

I've been around chickens all my life, and I've never gotten sick from them. Now that I've gotten older, I do wash my hands after handling them, but that doesn't mean I don't like to hug them every now and then! It seems quite natural to nuzzle baby chicks and ducklings. Sometimes I even kiss my Bourbon Red toms goodnight!
